Campus Climate Survey
South Dakota State University works with Benchworks by Elentra (formerly Skyfactor) to administer the University Campus Climate, Safety and Sexual Assault Survey to students and employees. This assessment provides campus constituents (anyone employed by SDSU or who takes courses from SDSU) an opportunity to voice their experiences and perceptions of the campus environment. The surveys include questions about our interaction with each other, the work environment, administrative policies, campus accessibility and safety, sexual assault, campus training, personal attitudes and behaviors, and overall perceptions of the university's culture and climate. The survey results are used to inform policies, programs and practices that enhance the campus environment.
*Please note: “Campus” refers to all SDSU locations (main campus and alternative locations, including online/distance education). If you are employed by SDSU or take courses from SDSU, we would like you to complete the survey.
Employee and student climate surveys are scheduled for Feb. 2 through March 2. Please check your email for your survey link.
What is a campus climate?
Campus climate is defined as “the current attitudes, behaviors and standards of faculty, staff, administrators and students concerning the level of respect for individual needs, abilities and potential” (Hurtado, 1992; Rankin, 2001). A healthy campus climate is grounded in respect for others, nurtured by dialogue between those of differing perspectives and evidenced by a pattern of civil interactions among community members.
What is a campus climate survey?
A campus climate survey is designed to assess and evaluate the campus culture, as well as provide an opportunity for the entire SDSU university community to share perspectives on their experiences engaging with the university.
This survey is for students and employees who work both on and off campus.
How long will this survey take to complete?
The Campus Climate, Safety and Sexual Assault Assessment will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
As faculty/staff, can I complete the survey during work hours?
Yes. Completing the survey should be considered part of your service to the institution. We encourage all faculty, staff, administrators and students to complete the survey.
Will I receive anything for participating?
There are no incentives to participate in the survey.
How has the information been used in past?
The campus climate survey data is important for strategic planning purposes and continuously improving the experiences of the entire SDSU community. The survey results have been used to guide professional development opportunities, update employee onboarding practices, initiate new university events and guide programming related to community building.
