Application Checklist for the Standard Option Professional Nursing Major

The following must be completed to be considered for the Standard Option Professional Nursing Major in Brookings, Rapid City, or Sioux Falls.

  • I have submitted an application to the university.
    • Prior to applying to the Professional Nursing Major, students must apply for admission to SDSU. The university application can be completed online through the Admissions Office website: Undergraduate Admissions Application.
    • Students who are currently enrolled at SDSU do not need to complete the university admissions application.
  • I have completed the application for admission to the Professional Nursing Major.
    • The application for the Professional Nursing Major must be hand-delivered to the Nursing Student Services office (Wagner Hall 352 in Brookings, the Health Science Center in Rapid City or the Terrance Sullivan Health Science Center in Sioux Falls) or mailed to SDSU Nursing Student Services, ATTN: Department Head, Box 2275 Brookings, SD 57007 on or before the deadline.
    • The application deadline for Spring admission is Sept. 25th (Brookings, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls) and the deadline for Fall admission is Jan. 25th (Brookings and Rapid City only).
  • I have read and understand the Professional Nursing Major admission requirements.
    • Eligible students may apply to the Professional Nursing Major when all required pre-requisite courses are completed or in progress (see course listing below). Further admission requirement details can be obtained online or from your advisor.
  • I have read and understand the technical standards.
    • Students preparing for education in the field of professional nursing must demonstrate a stable personality and the ability to meet the demands of the professional nurse role. For admission to, progression in and completion of the undergraduate program in nursing, the student must meet Technical Standards for the Professional Nursing Major.
  • Transfer students: I have attached/submitted all my transcripts.
    • All courses from other institutions must be transferred and present on the SDSU transcript by the time of application to the major. If this is not possible because of courses in progress at another institution, then attach ALL college transcripts (unofficial transcripts acceptable) to the nursing application.
    • Highlight the pre-requisite (or equivalent) courses on the transcripts.
    • If pre-requisite courses are in progress at another institution at the time of application to the major, include a current transcript or course schedule which shows these courses.
  • Non-native speakers of English: I have attached/submitted my TOEFL or IELTS score report.
    • The College of Nursing requires all students who meet the definition of English as a Second Language to complete the TOEFL or the IELTS exam, regardless of residency status.
    • The minimum TOEFL score required for admission to the Professional Nursing Major is 84 (iBT), with a minimum speaking score of 26. The required IELTS band score for admission to the Professional Nursing Major is 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each module. These scores are required before the student will be accepted into the major.
  • Students who answered “yes” to legal question(s): I have attached/submitted the required documentation.
    • Students who answered “yes” to any of the legal questions on the Professional Nursing Major application (see below) must submit copies of charges or citations and ALL communications with (to and from) the citing agency AND the court of jurisdiction, including evidence of completion/compliance with court requirements.
    • Documentation must be attached to application.
  • Pre-Requisite Courses: The following courses (both pre-nursing and general education) must be completed or in progress at the time of application to the Professional Nursing Major:

      • CHEM 106/106L Chemistry Survey & lab (or CHEM 112/112L Gen Chem I & lab)
      • SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology or 150 Social Problems or 240 Sociology of Rural America
      • PSYC 101 General Psychology
      • CHEM 108/108L Organic & Biochemistry & lab (or CHEM 114/114L Gen Chem II & lab)
      • BIOL 221/221L Anatomy & lab
      • HDFS 210 Lifespan Development
      • MICR 231/231L General Microbiology & lab
      • NUTR 315 Human Nutrition
      • BIOL 325/325L Physiology & lab
    • General education courses
      • MATH 102 College Algebra or higher
      • ENGL 101 Composition I
      • NURS 119 First-Year Seminar
      • SPCM 101 Fundamentals of Speech (or 215 Public Speaking)
      • System Graduation Requirement (SGR) #4: Humanities
  • Legal Questions: Clinical agencies and boards of nursing require criminal background checks and information as a basis for practice and licensure. Below are the questions from the Professional Nursing Major application and the South Dakota Board of Nursing licensure form.
    1. Have you ever been convicted, pled guilty or no contest/nolo contendere, pled guilty to, or been granted a deferred judgment or sentence with respect to a felony, misdemeanor, or petty offense other than minor traffic violations?
    2. Is there any pending criminal prosecution against you which would constitute a felony?
    3. Are you currently being investigated or is disciplinary action pending against any professional license(s) or certificate(s) held by you?
    4. Has any nursing license or certificate ever held by you in any state or country been denied, revoked, suspended, stipulated, placed on probation, or otherwise subjected to any type of disciplinary action?
    5. Have you ever had privileges revoked, reduced, or otherwise restricted at any hospital or other healthcare provider entity?
    6. Have you ever been subject to proceedings by a professional society to revoke, reduce, or restrict membership?
    7. Have you ever been treated for abuse or misuse of any alcohol or chemical substance?
    8. Have you ever experienced a physical, emotional, or mental condition that has endangered the health or safety of persons entrusted in your care?
    9. Do you currently owe child support arrearages in the amount of $l,000 or more?
