Five years ago, Sianne Downes didn’t even know SDSU existed. Now she is about to get her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and plans to come back for another year of classes and swimming.
“I don’t think I could have expected at all what I have experienced and achieved,” said Downes, who hails from Edenvale, South Africa, and is headed to the graduation stage with a 3.85 GPA, school and pool records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, and plans for a trip to the national Formula car competition at Michigan International Speedway.

When the South Dakota Board of Regents extended the South Dakota Advantage tuition rate to Minnesota residents in December 2023, it made SDSU the best value for Minnesota residents among its peer institutions in Minnesota. South Dakota Advantage will offer in-state tuition to Minnesota residents enrolling as new students at SDSU starting summer 2024.

The 11th annual Francis Miller Public Lecture in Cancer Research will be delivered by Keith Knutson at 7 p.m. in Herold Crest Room (253C) in the University Student Union on the South Dakota State University campus. The career possibilities for athletic trainers in South Dakota are expanding thanks to the efforts of a South Dakota State University clinical assistant professor. Educating future athletic trainers in the SDSU School of Health and Consumer Sciences and serving as the president of the South Dakota Athletic Trainers’ Association, Mary Beth Zwart has made an impact on the profession and on her students.
