Professor Hemachand Tummala has been named head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at South Dakota State University.
He has been serving as interim department head since Sept. 22 when professor Omathanu Perumal was chosen as the associate dean for research. A nationwide search was launched in the spring and Dean Dan Hansen announced Tummala’s appointment June 23.
Tummala has been at SDSU since 2008.
Hansen said, “Dr. Tummala has a strong track record as a researcher and has been recognized nationally for his innovative teaching strategies. I look forward to working with Dr. Tummala as he moves into this role permanently.”
Tummala will continue to serve as graduate program coordinator until an interim can be appointed.
Tummala received his education in India and worked in research positions at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the University of Tennessee and the University of Memphis from 2003 to 2008.
He has more than 20 years of experience in disease biology, immunology and drug/vaccine delivery. His research interests are in designing various vaccine and drug delivery platforms for cancer, infectious diseases and intestinal health. Tummala also teaches pharmaceutics/compounding pharmacy courses to professional pharmacy students and graduate students.
