South Dakota State University will hold its 2021 commencement ceremonies May 8-9 on the College Green, the area east of the South Dakota Art Museum and west of Morrill Hall.
In February, SDSU committed to having in-person, outdoor commencement exercises for not just spring 2021 graduates, but for spring, summer and fall 2020 graduates as well. On May 8-9, the university will fulfill that commitment by hosting the 2021 commencement ceremonies on the College Green. Set up for Graduation on the Green began Wednesday, setting the scene for the first outdoor commencement ceremony at State since 1972.
The venue allows for seating up to 450 graduates and six guests for each of them, providing an additional 3,000 seats for spectators. Having commencement outdoors allows for social distancing and a larger number of participants at one time. Attendees are encouraged to wear face coverings and enter from the university side of the location. Entrances and parking lots will be identified.
May 8’s ceremonies are from the colleges of:
- 9:30 a.m. – Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences; and Natural Sciences; and
- 4 p.m. – Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
May 9’s ceremonies are from the colleges of:
- 10 a.m. – Education and Human Sciences; and Nursing; and
- 4 p.m. – Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering; and Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions.
On May 8, the student speakers are Keri Pappas at 9:30 a.m. with Madison Dulas and Thalissa Grant-McClure at 4 p.m.
May 9’s speakers will be Caitlin Thilges and Brianna Vig at 10 a.m. and Gavin Doering at 4 p.m.
In addition, SDSU will have the University Student Union’s Market and Volstorff Ballroom available for viewing all of the ceremonies.
As decided in February, Frost Arena will only be used as an inclement weather location. If the need to move inside arises, the number of guests will be limited and alternative viewing locations will be made available on campus.
