Larson Family Foundation to entrust SDSU with Early Learning Center

South Dakota State University and the Larson Family Foundation have created a relationship to ensure ongoing child care service to the Brookings community and greater access to child care for SDSU employees through the Early Learning Center of Brookings. This was approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents last week.

The relationship will redirect operations to benefit SDSU employees as child care openings become available in the Early Learning Center of Brookings. The Larson Family Foundation has also set aside financial resources to provide ongoing support for the ELCB.

“We are very pleased the Larson Family Foundation has entrusted SDSU to work through a process that will provide a child care opportunity for children of SDSU employees,” said SDSU President Barry Dunn. “As we continue to recruit faculty and employees to SDSU from around the country and the world, one of the concerns we hear most is the availability of child care options in Brookings. This relationship with the Larson Family Foundation gives us an option for our employees.”

ELCB was created nearly seven years ago by the Larson Family Foundation to expand child care options for the Brookings community. ELCB contracts with Bright Horizons to operate the child care center, a relationship that will continue under the new partnership between the Larson Family Foundation and SDSU.

“The Larson Family Foundation is pleased SDSU has agreed to assume oversight of the Early Learning Center of Brookings,” said Maree Larson, the Larson Family Foundation executive director. “Under the management of Bright Horizons, the ELCB has provided exceptional care and early learning opportunities for area children.

“The Larson Family Foundation board wishes to return the organization’s focus solely to its grant-making activities but remains committed to providing high-quality early care and education to families,” Larson added. “The partnership between SDSU and Bright Horizons ensures families will continue to have access to a strong early education for their children.”
