The entire ranking is available at YourLocalSecurity.com.
“South Dakota State University has ranked as the safest college campus in South Dakota, a recognition it also earned in 2019. According to our analysis, the university has also maintained its standing nationally, having placed in the top 15 percent yet again for safest college campus overall. It’s exciting for us to see colleges like SDSU maintaining and continually improving upon safety protocols and practices,” said Alice Good, communications specialist at YourLocalSecurity.com.
YourLocalSecurity.com updated and refined its methodology to find the safest college campuses in America. This year, it looked at data from the U.S. Department of Education’s Campus Safety and Security and the FBI’s 2018 Uniform Crime Report. From there, YourLocalSecurity.com narrowed the study to only public, private and nonprofit institutions with a minimum of 5,000 students offering two- or four-year degrees.
It evaluated the safety of a college campus based on a combination of violent crimes per 10,000 people, property crimes per 10,000 people, hate crimes per 10,000 people and number of Violent Against Women Act offenses per 10,000 people. After analyzing those factors, it found each school’s overall crime score.
