Smith named SDSU Civil Service Employee of the Month

Chuck Smith

Chuck Smith has been named South Dakota State University’s Civil Service Employee of the Month for February. Smith, an accounting assistant for the Facilities and Services Customer Services Center, will be honored at 3 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Facilities and Services’ main building common area.

“I have never worked with a person who gives as much attention to detail as he does,” said Elizabeth Jessen, program assistant I for Facilities and Services. “His skills do not end with office work. He also projects a warm, cheerful attitude to our customers. I have seen him resolve conflicts and handle other difficult situations with remarkable patience and admirable tact. He loves people, works hard and always tries to lift the spirits of those around him. I believe these characteristics represent all that is good in the university.”

Smith has been employed at South Dakota State and recently completed his 16th year of service.

“Chuck is flexible, honest, humble, will ask questions if needed and is very good at taking notes,” said Marla Mitchell, a program assistant II for Facilities and Services’ Customer Services Center. “I have known Chuck for many years. He’s true to the core, dependable and you always know where you stand with Chuck.”

Smith, who graduated from SDSU in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in business economics, has worked many years as a ticket scanner for athletic events. He likes to spend time with family and friends and watching movies.

“Chuck cares for all students, faculty and co-workers with a great amount of respect,” Jessen said. “He is highly respected by those he comes in contact with and is an exemplary role model to others. The combination of his high ethical standards and vast experiences enables him to be an excellent mentor to other employees.”

All SDSU Employee of the Month selections are determined through a nomination process by the Civil Service Advisory Council. Each civil service employee of the month receives an appreciation monetary gift from the F.O. Butler Foundation. The trustees of the foundation recognize the importance of civil service employees and take this opportunity to thank them for their exemplary service.
