Havard named January’s Civil Service Employee of the Month

Kimberly Havard has been named South Dakota State University’s Civil Service Employee of the Month for January. Havard, who serves as a facility worker at Hansen Hall, will be honored at 2 p.m. Jan. 30, in the Caldwell Hall lobby.

“The dedication and loyalty with which she comes to work is really appreciable and out of the box,” said Ankit Kaushik, a student co-worker of Havard’s. “She is never lazy about her work. I’ve been working with her for around a year and she never complains about any work given to her.”

Havard has been employed with the Department of Housing and Residential Life since September 2002.

“It has been an immense pleasure to work with Kim in Waneta and Hansen,” said Uday Mishra, another student co-worker. “She treats us like a mother and has always been kind and caring.”

Havard displays that same attitude to the students who live in Hansen Hall, taking time to get to know the residents and community assistants in the building.

“Kim should be what we all strive for at SDSU,” said Meila Miller, the laundry and operations supervisor for Housing and Residential Life. “She’s the person who made being away from home not so difficult, who doesn’t see it as just a job, who cares about the students that work with her. Kim is a fixture to that building and this campus.

“I was most impressed with the fact that students come back during summer or Christmas break to see their old stomping grounds and ask if Kim was around,” Miller continued. “She puts in a lot of time and effort into her job to make sure each student feels like they are at their home away from home.”

Havard and her husband, Mark, have four children who range in age from 5 to 17.

All SDSU Employee of the Month selections are determined through a nomination process by the Civil Service Advisory Council. Each civil service employee of the month receives an appreciation monetary gift from the F.O. Butler Foundation. The trustees of the foundation recognize the importance of civil service employees and take this opportunity to thank them for their exemplary service.
