Five international awards were recently given to Epicosity, a Sioux Falls-based marketing firm, and South Dakota State University for their work in developing and launching the “Built By You and SDSU” marketing campaign. The campaign launched in August.
The MarCom Awards were administered by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals, consisting of several thousand marketing, communications, advertising, public relations, digital and web professionals worldwide. The campaign awards included:

- “The Dream, The Drive, The Rewards” Video Series—GOLD
- “Be Great. Start Here.” At-a-Glance Brochure—GOLD
- Jackrabbit Cutout Infographic—HONORABLE MENTION

The MarCom Awards began in 2004 and are considered one of the largest, most-respected creative competitions in the world. Annually, approximately 6,000 print and digital entries are submitted from dozens of countries. Awards are given in the categories of marketing, publications, print creativity, strategic communications, digital media, web creativity and audio/video.
“The ‘Built by You and SDSU’ campaign captures the excitement, opportunity and rewards SDSU can provide while showcasing the abilities of our current students and younger alumni who are having an impact in society today,” said Mike Lockrem, SDSU’s director of university marketing and communications. “Connecting with high school students is critical and they want to see the value and rewards they will receive when pursuing the opportunities SDSU offers and this campaign hit that mark. We are honored to be recognized for that work and appreciate the relationship we have with the talented people at Epicosity.”
Development of the “Built by You and SDSU” campaign began in January 2019 with multiple campaign concepts. Those concepts were shared with high school student focus groups and later refined and presented to faculty and staff at SDSU. The “Built by You and SDSU” campaign emerged from those sessions and production of the campaign began in May for the August launch.
“There was tremendous input from high school students, faculty and staff at SDSU, along with much broader audiences that provided strong insight and perspective on what is needed in today’s higher education,” Sivertsen said. “Premier universities like SDSU have a wide range of audiences and capturing what is important to each audience is a challenge we continue to overcome.”
