Patricia Mast has been named South Dakota State University’s Civil Service Employee of the Month for October. Mast serves as a program assistant in the Office of International Affairs.
Mast will be recognized from 3-4:30 p.m. Oct. 25 in room 130 of the Hilton M. Briggs Library.
“Patricia has never met a stranger. She loves everyone and always has a smile on her face,” said Kim Hyland, a program assistant in the Office of Continuing and Distance Education. “She is the most welcoming person to everyone who comes through the doors at International Affairs. She treats everyone more like family than co-workers or students, and she makes everyone feel at ease.”
Mast was praised for her student interaction, as described by Sally Gillman, director for Study Abroad: “Her approach to all students with whom she interacts is clearly based on her vision and belief to embrace diversity in everyone and to treat all students with kindness, gentleness and fairness. Further, Patricia always provides ways to make everyone she meets feel included, important and to help students get access to what they need.”
Mast has worked in the Office of International Affairs since March 2012 and has worked 18 years overall at SDSU.
“Despite the overwhelming amount of work that everyone must do, Patricia consistently finds ways to help her co-workers and the other departments when needed as well,” said Indrajith Kanishka Jayasooriya, a former international student and student employee for International Affairs. “Her willingness to assist others and her commitment to educating other employees is unequaled. Staff members from other campus departments have consistently praised Patricia for her kindness and support.”
Mast said she appreciates working with the SDSU staff and students.
“The wonder displayed by the international students when they arrive in the U.S. keeps me appreciating what I sometimes take for granted,” Mast said.
All SDSU Employee of the Month selections are determined through a nomination process by the Civil Service Advisory Council. Each civil service employee of the month receives an appreciation monetary gift from the F.O. Butler Foundation. The trustees of the foundation recognize the importance of civil service employees and take this opportunity to thank them for their exemplary service.
