Micayla Standish has been named South Dakota State University’s Civil Service Employee of the Month for August. Standish, who serves as a graphic designer at University Marketing and Communications, will be honored at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 19 in the Communications Center.

“As a graphic designer for the university, I love that I get to create marketing materials that hopefully make an impact on our community,” Standish said. “I truly enjoy getting up and going to work knowing that I get to do what I am passionate about alongside some truly great co-workers. My skill set as a designer has improved drastically since starting here almost four years ago and that is mainly because I have a great team that pushes me to do my best.”

Standish has worked at UMC since November 2015 and has a hand in the layout and design of a wide array of projects. Her design for the SDSU football schedule poster won the university division in the 2018-19 CoSIDA Publications and Digital Design Contest. She also received five awards for her work in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 contests.

“Micayla has been a positive, forward-thinking colleague through our time working together and has elevated the image and reputation of Jackrabbits Athletics with her hard work,” said assistant sports information director Andrew Sogn. “I took over coordination duties in April 2017 and Micayla was a go-to resource from the start. She answers questions quickly and is willing to go above and beyond. Her design work is top-notch, and she is always quick with a ‘let’s do it’ when we bring in a new idea.”

“In 2017, our college magazine was in need of a makeover,” said Dan Hansen, the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions’ associate dean for student services. “Micayla attended our planning meeting for the upcoming issue and asked if we would be open to looking at a new layout. In the coming weeks, she shared possible designs, solicited feedback and landed on a new design. She hit a home run. It was not only me who was impressed—I have received numerous comments from alums about the fresh look. It has really helped re-energize the publication.”

In her spare time, Standish enjoys family time with her husband, Todd, and 1-year-old daughter, Lyla. She also appreciates time outdoors, especially days spent relaxing on a pontoon.

All SDSU Employee of the Month selections are determined through a nomination process by the Civil Service Advisory Council. Each civil service employee of the month receives an appreciation monetary gift from the F.O. Butler Foundation. The trustees of the foundation recognize the importance of civil service employees and take this opportunity to thank them for their exemplary service.
