Online sociology degree ranked among nation's best


2019 online sociology bachelor's degree ranking named South Dakota State University’s online bachelor’s degree program in sociology one of the nation’s best in its 2019 rankings.

SDState’s Department of Sociology and Rural Studies offers three majors, three minors, an associate degree and a master’s degree online serving students who live and work in rural and remote communities or busy city centers.

The programs comprise 120 credit hours of major and elective courses and culminate in a capstone course. Coursework covers topics including research methods, sociological theory and investigating the social world.

The university’s online sociology degrees provide an overview of fundamental sociology topics, including deviance and crime, contemporary sociological issues and family dynamics. Online undergraduate students pay the same tuition rate, regardless of state residency.

“Our students often have busy professional and personal lives, and the online degree allows them to juggle their responsibilities and succeed in gaining their degree,” said Mary Emery, who leads the department. “We also offer service learning and internship opportunities, allowing them to earn college credit while gaining valuable work experience and contributing to their community. Our articulation agreements with tribal, community and tech colleges also provide a way for these students to build on their successes and earn their bachelor’s degree in sociology. We are privileged to work with great students who go on to make significant contributions at work and in their communities.”

The department’s online master’s degree program in sociology was ranked No. 4 in’s 2017 rankings.
