College Choice credited SDSU for offering scholarships for veterans, including the Michael Goodale Scholarship in Veterans Affairs. It also cited the newly constructed Veteran Affairs Resource Center, which offers a location to hold events, foster camaraderie and offer supportive spaces for veterans. SDSU also has a writing workshop and book club specifically for veterans as this program seeks to help military veterans share the stories they have gathered through their service with one another, to help foster community and support in the veterans community at SDSU. For its efforts, College Choice ranked State No. 18. The list is available at https://www.collegechoice.net/rankings/best-colleges-for-veterans/.

South Dakota State was also ranked Military Friendly® School by Victory Media.

State was ranked for the fourth-straight year among four-year schools by Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 rankings. The ninth annual rankings factor in the results of Military Times’ comprehensive school-by-school survey of veteran and military student offerings and rates of academic achievement. SDSU was ranked 31st in the listing.

“It’s nice get noticed for our efforts, and it confirms that we are doing the right things for our students who are veterans,” said Russ Chavez, SDSU’s director for Veterans Affairs. “I think this new facility and the annual renewable scholarship recently started by Gene and JoAnn Goodale will help. I’m looking for more ways to get scholarships for our veterans here and hope to become even more involved in community activities.”

2018 Military Times

Military Times evaluated colleges based on their survey responses and also used data from the federal education, defense and Veterans Affairs departments to determine how schools stacked up across five categories: university culture, academic quality and outcomes, policies, student support, and cost and financial aid. More than 500 colleges took part in this year’s detailed survey. For the full rankings, go to http://bestforvets.militarytimes.com/2018-11-20/colleges/4-year/.
