South Dakota Summer Spotlight set for July 24-26

The 2009 South Dakota Summer Spotlight and State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest will be July 24 to 26 in Huron.

Buildings open at noon on July 23 for stalling livestock and are located at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron.

At 5 p.m. on July 23, check-in for some cattle breeds begins, with other breeds checking in on July 24. The State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest begins at 7 a.m. July 24.

Sheep check-in begins at 11 a.m. on July 24. Cattle shows will start at 3 p.m. that day, and a South Dakota Born and Bred Sheep Show is set for 5 p.m. July 24.

Starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, the Summer Spotlight Sheep Show will be held. Cattle shows begin at 8 a.m. July 25 as well. Cattle showing will continue throughout the day.

Events conclude with the Summer Spotlight Pig Show at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 26.

To register for the event, participants must have health papers for their livestock. To participate in purebred competitions, papers documenting the breed are required. Call the breed representative to receive information on the show.

Participants who arrive early can take part in a livestock Skillathon contest will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. July 23 at the fairgrounds. The contest allows livestock 4-H’ers to show their knowledge of beef, sheep, and swine.
