The Importance of Internships

Improve Your Resume

1. The biggest reason to apply for internships is to build up your resume and improve your skills. Interns often do a variety of different things to make the most of the learning experience which is a big advantage when going into the workforce. Right after graduation employers know you may not have done that exact job before, but if you have learned skills during your internship that relate to that job it will make you stand out as a candidate. Using the knowledge, you gain in your classes and getting to apply it in the real world is such a great experience and will make your first job after graduation that much easier.

Make Connections

2. Finding that job after graduation will be that much easier if you have professionals that know you and your work ethic on your side. Those connections you make through your internships will help get your name out into the industry world, someone you meet at your internship could connect or recommend you to a full-time job once you graduate. Also, remember to utilize LinkedIn to stay connected with industry professionals after your internship.

Learn About the Industry

3. An internship will not only help sharpen your skills and make connections, but it will also help you get to know the industry that you want to be in. For example, if you are interested in the banking industry and want to eventually be a loan officer any internship with a bank will help you learn more about the banking industry so you can feel more prepared when talking to future employers and industry professionals. You can also learn what type of skills you may need for the job you want in the future so you know what you need to work on or learn about in order to tailor your resume to that job title.

Learn What You Want (or Don’t Want)

4. Along with helping you learn about what you want in your future job internships can also help you realize what you don’t want. If you are mentored by someone with your dream job title you are able to see if that lifestyle and day to day workload is something you want or don’t want. Internships can really help you find out what you are passionate about and what you want to strive for in the future.
