Four Year GOAL Checklist

Four years in college and go by quickly, so it's important to stay on track both inside the classroom and outside of the classroom. Setting goals for both areas is key to success but can be overwhelming so we put together a four-year goal checklist for our students.

First-Year Checklist

Explore! 

  • Look at all of SDSU's Academic Minors
  • Get Social (Meet people)
  • Participate in residence hall activities
  • Tour the Wintrode Tutoring Center, Math Help Center & Writing Center
  • Create a profile on Handshake through the Career Development Office

Get Involved!

  • Join a club, organization, or athletic team
  • Attend 5+ different student clubs/groups on campus
  • Attend a Career Fair to explore options in your fields of interest and observe/visit with 3-5 employers to learn about future careers

Start Planning!

  • Meet with your advisor at least once per semester
  • Create a tentative graduation plan
  • Complete 30+ credits per year to graduate in 4 years
  • Draft your college resume. It is best to start this process early!

Second Year Checklist

Keep Planning!

  • Attend Fall and Spring Ness School Career Fairs to explore options and meet professionals in your fields of interest
  • Begin researching study abroad opportunities and national student exchange options
  • Apply for a summer internship, part-time, and opportunities that will help you gain work experience, learn more about your field and work preferences

Staying on Track

  • Visit Academic Advisor 2/year (fall and spring)
  • Verify your GPA and total credits to graduate in 4 years
  • Solidify your academic minor

Adulting 101

  • Visit the Career Development Office for a resume review and practice interviews
  • Find a part-time job to build your resume with transferable skills
  • Explore housing options for next year (on-campus or off-campus)
  • Choose 1-3 student groups/clubs to fully participate in

Third Year

Career Hunting

  • Attend both fall and spring Ness School Career Fairs (and the CAFES one if you're interested in Ag)
  • Participate in an internship or job to refine skills and build your professional network
  • Research companies and pinpoint organizations with job titles that use your skills and for which you believe you are a good match

Stand Out!

  • Serve on a club/organization and seek a meaningful leadership position
  • Continue meetings with your Academic Advisor at least once each semester
  • Maintain a competitive GPA
  • Finalize plans and study abroad or national student exchange plans

Fourth Year

Graduation!

  • Meet with your Academic Advisor to review progress towards graduation
  • Complete graduation application (Sept. or January) on MyState
  • Finalize graduate/professional school applications and graduate assistantship applications

Landing the Job!

  • Refine your resume and cover letter
  • Participate in an in-person mock interview with the Office of Career Development
  • Attend campus career fairs and utilize Handshake until you have a full-time position solidified for post-graduation
  • Join a professional organization related to your major (if available)
  • Take on leadership roles within clubs and organizations¬†
