Intramural Rules for Indoor Soccer

Location

The contest will be held in the Wellness Center MAC gym.

Player Management

All Intramural Participants must adhere to the Membership and Eligibility rules establish by the SDSU Intramural Sports Constitution Articles IV and VI which state:

  1. All SDSU students regularly enrolled and having paid the General Activity Fee are eligible for participation in activities programmed by the Intramural Sports Office.
  2. SDSU faculty and staff and community members that have paid a membership fee to the SDSU Wellness Center and have purchased an IM Sports Pass are eligible for participation in intramural activities.
  3. Non Wellness Center Members must purchase a Non-member IM Pass in order to be eligible to participate.
  4. Any student who has participated at the varsity level will be ineligible for competition in that sport for one full year once they are no longer a member of the varsity team.
  5. An intramural team roster may not include more varsity letter winners or Sport Club members that participate in a similar sport that would total one-half the number of players necessary to start a given contest.
  6. A roster may have no more than 3 IM supervisors on an individual team.
  7. A player can only be on the roster of one team per sport.
  8. No individual may participate in Intramural Sports while under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
  9. Players must check in to at least one regular season game to be considered eligible for playoffs.

Equipment provided by Intramural Program

  1. A game ball will be provided by the Intramural Sports Program.

Unacceptable Equipment specifications

  1. No cleats
  2. No hats or bandanas
  3. No jewelry
    1. Jewelry that cannot be taken off or serves a specific medical service must be taped down.
  4. Participants refusing to adhere to the equipment rules will be barred from participation.
  5. No clothing with snaps, zippers, hoods, etc.

Use of unacceptable equipment will result in a yellow card.

Contest Length

The contest will consist of two 20 minute halves and a 3 minute halftime.

  1. Clock will run continuously, no extra time will be added.
  2. Teams will switch sides at the end of the first half.

Contests may end in a tie.

Any team unable to field the minimum number of players by game time will forfeit the contest.

A difference of 10 goals at halftime or any point in the second half will end the game.

Playoff games which end in a tie will go into overtime.

Overtime

  1. 1st OT – 3 minutes of regular play. Team ahead after 3 minutes wins.
  2. 2nd OT – 2 minute golden goal. First team to score wins.
  3. 3rd OT – Shootout. 5 shooters each team.
    1. Co-Rec must alternate genders, teams must continue their lineup throughout.

Gameplay

Rock/paper/scissors will decide beginning possession and team sides.

The second half will begin with the opposite team receiving possession.

Gameplay

  1. The ball may be struck in such a way that it contacts one or more walls without penalty or stoppage.
  2. If a ball struck by a team contacts the wall above the glass, play is stopped and the opposing team is awarded an indirect kick at the location where the ball left the arena or made contact with the ceiling.
  3. The ball is out of play when:
    1. The ball wholly crosses the goal line and a goal is scored (Result: Kickoff)
    2. The ball is stuck in goal netting or netting on stairs (Result: Goal Kick or Corner)
    3. Structure violation – Ball hits lighting or ceiling (Result: Indirect Kick)
    4. Kicked outside the courts (Result: Indirect Kick)
    5. Play is stopped by the official (Result: Drop Ball)
  4. Ball is still in play:
    1. A rebound is off the crossbar, goalpost, back post, or walls.
    2. A rebound off the official.
    3. The drop ball touches the ground.
  5. A drop ball occurs:
    1. When opponents simultaneously strike the ball out-of-bounds.
    2. When an injury occurs
    3. Official stoppage
  6. Goalies
    1. A ball cannot be played out by the goalie, with their hands, without touching another person on the field before crossing the midfield line. Penalty: Indirect kick at mid-field.
    2. Goal kicks also have to be touched by ANY player before crossing midfield. Penalty: Indirect kick at mid-field.
    3. The goalie may however play a ball to his feet, and make a pass or shot beyond midfield.
      1. No drop kicks or punts by the goalie.
  7. Substitutions
    1. Substitutions are allowed and may be made on the fly
      1. Substitutions must take place within the substitution area
      2. A player leaving the court must be entirely off the court before a substitute may enter
      3. Non-substitutes must remain in the team bench area
      4. If violation continues, an indirect kick will be given to the opposing team. A yellow card may also be issued for repeated violation.
  8. Players
    1. No spectators will be allowed on the team benches and are to remain outside the court of play at all times.
    2. There are a maximum of five players on the field per game.
    3. There are a minimum of three players on the field per game.
      1. Failure to provide three eligible players before the start of the game will result in a forfeit.
  9. Co-Rec
    1. The ratio between male and females when fielding five participants must be 3:2. When fielding four participants the ratio must be 1:1. When fielding three the ratio must be 2:1.
      1. Not adhering to the acceptable ratios will result in a forfeit.
  10. Goals
    1. A goal shall be legal, when the WHOLE ball has crossed the plane of the goal-line, between the goalposts and the crossbar.
    2. A goal may be scored:
      1. During regular play
      2. Penalty kick
      3. Direct free kick
      4. Kickoff
      5. Corner Kick
    3. A direct goal may not be scored on an indirect free kick - Goal can only be scored if ball touches ANY player other than the person who took the indirect free kick.

Offside

  1. There shall be no offside in indoor soccer

Yellow Cards

  1. Fouls resulting in a yellow card for the offending player include:
    1. Unsporting behavior
    2. Persistently infringing the rules of the game
    3. Delay of the game (including by the goal keeper)
    4. An unnecessary high or flagrant kick
  2. Two Card Policy
    1. If a PLAYER receives two yellow cards during the course of game, said player will be shown a yellow and red card.
    2. NO SLIDE TACKLING!!!
      1. Automatic yellow card. Red card if contact is made with an opponent.
      2. Dangerous contact including, but not limited to, pushing an opponent while near a wall, may be grounds for immediate disqualification.

Red Cards

  1. Fouls resulting in a Red Card for the offending player include:
    1. Receiving a second yellow card (caution) in a game
    2. Foul play or violent conduct, including the use of offensive, insulting, or abusive language or gestures
    3. Denying the opposing team an obvious goal scoring opportunity by intentionally handling the ball (except by the goalkeeper within his/her penalty area)
  2. A player receiving a red card will be immediately removed from the contest without possibility to return in that contest.
  3. Players receiving a red card shall follow rules as previously outlined. Their team will not be allowed to substitute for that player and shall play down for the remainder of the contest.

Indirect

  1. Indirect free kick awarded when any of the following offenses are committed (kick taken from the nearest spot outside the goalie crease when infringement takes place in penalty area):
  2. Dangerous play (e.g. attempting to kick ball held by goalkeeper)
    1. Includes Bicycle kicks and high kicks High kicks are any attempted kick on the ball where the height of the attempt exceeds the shoulder of a player nearby
  3. Obstruction
  4. Charging the goalkeeper in the penalty area
  5. Goalkeeper throws ball directly over the halfway line (without it first touching any player)
  6. Goalkeeper picks up or touches with his hands a back pass
  7. Goalkeeper picks up or touches with his hands a kick-in from a teammate
  8. Goalkeeper controls the ball with any part of his body for more than 4 seconds

Direct

  1. Direct free kick awarded when a player intentionally commits any of the following offenses (penalty kick awarded when infringement takes place in penalty area)
    1. Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent
    2. Tripping an opponent
    3. Jumping at an opponent
    4. Charging an opponent in a violent or dangerous manner
    5. Striking or attempting to strike an opponent
    6. Holding an opponent
    7. Pushing an opponent
    8. Charging an opponent with shoulder (i.e., shoulder charge)
    9. Sliding at an opponent (i.e., sliding tackle – automatic card)
    10. Handling the ball (except goalkeeper)

Any protest made must be addressed by the Intramural Official immediately.

Judgment calls are not protestable.

All protests must be issued in accordance with article XI of the Intramural Sports Constitution.

Forfeiture

Teams will forfeit the game if they receive 4 or more yellow cards for gameplay and conduct.

  1. Any red card will count as two yellow cards

Any team that receives 3 cards for conduct related fouls (Unsportsmanlike conduct, fighting, use of profanity direct at the referees, etc.) will forfeit the game.

  1. A team which receives two yellow cards for conduct may not earn a sportsmanship rating higher than 3.
  2. A team that receives a red card for conduct may not receive a sportsmanship rating higher than 2.

Player Interaction

The only participant who can make appeals to an official is the team captain.

Consistent infraction of this rule may lead to an ejection.

Any player who is creating an environment which any official deems as contrary to the goals of the Intramural Sports Program is subject to ejection.

Use of profanity directed at an official shall result in an immediate ejection.

Any misconduct executed by an official must be brought to the immediate attention of the IM Supervisor.

Any team or individual that fails to be ready for play at the scheduled time of the contest will forfeit to their opponent.

Forfeited contests will not be rescheduled.

  1. A fine of $25 shall be assessed and subtracted from the team’s deposit.

After a team forfeits two contests in a sport, the team will be suspended until a second $25 hobo dough forfeit fee is paid.

If a team must forfeit, the Intramurals office should be notified no later than 3pm the day of the contest.

  1. This will count as a default and not a forfeit.

Teams shall be charged a $25 refundable deposit for each league sport which may not be transferred from sport to sport.

Must be paid at Miller Wellness Center welcome desk prior to team creation.

Sportsmanship

Team captain is responsible for educating and informing all players and spectators affiliated with his/her team about the system.

The officials working that game and or any intramural staff member will rate each team in each contest on sportsmanship.

The intramural staff and officials rate teams and organizations on a 4 point rating system. To qualify for playoffs, a team must average at least a 3.0 over a minimum of three (3) games to be included in playoffs.

Teams must also maintain an acceptable sportsmanship rating for each game throughout the playoffs in order to advance.

Rating System Criteria:

“4” – Some question of judgment or rule interpretation with minimal complaint.

“3” – Good game, but not perfect. Repeated question of judgment or complaints by team.

“2” – Highest rating a team can achieve with one unsportsmanlike call in softball, volleyball, flag football; yellow card in soccer; and a technical foul in basketball.

“1” – Consistent harassment of the officials. Highest rating a team can achieve with 2 unsportsmanlike conducts, technical fouls (not on the same participant), or yellow cards.

“0” – Includes threatening an employee. Forfeit includes any game in which a team is ejected for fighting and/or 3 unsportsmanlike penalties or technical fouls in a game.
