Intramural Rules for Basketball Co-Rec

Location

The contest will be held on the Wellness Center basketball courts.

Player Management

All Intramural participants must adhere to the Membership and Eligibility Rules establish by the SDSU Intramural Sports Constitution Articles IV and VI which states:

  1. All SDSU students regularly enrolled and having paid the General Activity Fee are eligible for participation in activities programmed by the Intramural Sports Office.
  2. SDSU faculty and staff and community members that have paid a membership fee to the SDSU Wellness Center and have purchased an IM Sports Pass are eligible for participation in intramural activities.
  3. Non Wellness Center members can purchase a Non-member IM Pass to be eligible to participate in intramural activities.
  4. Any student who has participated at the varsity level will be ineligible for competition in that sport for one full year once they are no longer a member of the varsity team.
  5. An intramural team roster may not include more varsity letter winners or Sport Club members that participate in a similar sport that would total one-half the number of players necessary to start a given contest.
  6. A roster may have no more than 3 IM supervisors on an individual team.
  7. A player can only be on the roster of one team per sport.
  8. No individual may participate in Intramural Sports while under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.
  9. Players must check in to at least one regular season game to be considered eligible for playoffs.

Equipment provided by Intramural Program:

  1. No pants with snaps, zippers, etc.
  2. Participants refusing to adhere to the equipment rules will be barred from participation.
  3. Jewelry that cannot be taken off or serves a specific medical service must be taped down.
  4. No hats or bandanas will be allowed.
  5. No jewelry will be allowed.

Unacceptable Equipment specifications:

  1. Men’s ball will be the default ball used in all games.
  2. A game ball will be provided by the Intramural Sports Program.

There is a maximum of five players on the court per game.

There is a minimum of four players on the court per game.

  1. Failure to provide four eligible players before the start of the game will result in a forfeit.
  2. If an injury causes a team to drop below four eligible players, the team may continue the contest provided they have a chance to win.

Co-Rec

  1. The ratio between male and females when fielding five participants must be 3:2. When fielding four participants the ratio must be 1:1.
  2. Failure to provide the acceptable gender ratios will result in a forfeit.

Contest Length

The contest will consist of two 20 minute halves and a three minute halftime.

  1. Contests may end in a tie.
  2. The clock will run continuous in the first half, only stopping for timeouts.  The clock will stop on every dead ball in the last two minutes of the 2nd half.

Each team will be given three timeouts per game.

If a team is winning by 50 points or greater at halftime, or any time during 2nd half, the game will be called.  If a team is up by 20 points or greater with 2 minutes or less left in the game, the game will be called.

Playoff games which end in a tie will go into overtime.

Overtime

  1. 1st OT: 3 minutes. Clock stops under 2 minutes.
  2. 2nd OT: 2 minutes. Clock stops on dead balls.
  3. 3rd OT: 1 minute. Clock stops on dead balls.

Timeouts

  1. Each team will be given one timeout per OT period.
  2. Timeouts from regulation will not carry over.

Gameplay

Jump ball starts. Go towards the basket opposite of team’s bench.

If a contestant is ejected, they will be reported by the supervisor and will meet with the coordinator of intramural sports.

Gameplay

  1. The official must touch the ball prior to distributing the ball after every change of possession resulting from fouls, violations, distribution of free throws, time outs, or the ball becoming dead out of bounds.
  2. Co-Rec
    1. NO restrictions on defense play.
      1. Any defense CAN be played.
      2. Men CAN guard women & women CAN guard men.
      3. Men CAN block women & women CAN block men.
    2. NO restrictions on offense play.

Substitutions

  1. Substitution strictly occurs on Dead Ball Only. Players may not substitute until the official blows the whistle for a foul, violation, or dead ball and the substitute is signaled in.
  2. Players must first report to the scores table before being summoned on to the court

Scoring

  1. Field Goal: 2 points
  2. Free Throw: 1 point
  3. Three-point Field Goal: 3 points

Fouls

  1. A personal foul is a player foul, which involves illegal contact with an opponent.
    1. Hit on the arm
    2. Hand check
    3. Tripping
    4. Blocking/charging
    5. Pushing
    6. Holding
    7. Elbowing
  2. A common foul is any of the fouls listed above. In the event of a common foul, the ball will be inbounded nearest the place the foul occurred. In the event of a shooting foul, free throws will be awarded to the offended player.
  3. An intentional foul is a personal or technical foul designed to stop or keep the clock from starting, to neutralize an opponent’s obvious advantageous position, contact away from the ball, or when not playing the ball.
  4. A flagrant foul may be a personal or technical foul of a violent or savage nature, or technical noncontact foul which displays unacceptable conduct. It may or may not be intentional.
  5. A player control foul (charging/offensive foul) is a common foul committed by a player while he/she is in control of the ball, or by an airborne shooter.
  6. A team foul is any personal foul or technical foul which is charged to either team. All team fouls are counted to reach the bonus free throw.
  7. An unsportsmanlike foul is a noncontact technical foul which consists of unfair, unethical, or dishonorable conduct. Acts of deceit such as accepting a teammates foul or free throw, faking being fouled, or use of profane or inappropriate language or gestures are unsportsmanlike.
  8. Dunking will be allowed under the following guidelines:
    1. Any individual caught hanging on the rim or from the net without the obvious intention of dunking the ball will be reported to the Intramural Coordinator. In a game, the penalty will be a technical foul and after 2 violations of this rule the player will be immediately ejected from the game and reported to the Intramural Coordinator.

Technical Foul:

  1. A technical foul can be, but is not limited to the following:
    1. Throwing the ball (forcefully/spiking)
    2. Swearing at the officials (Ejection)
    3. Unnecessary argumentation
    4. Unnecessary roughness
    5. Hanging on the rim
    6. Substituting without a dead ball
    7. Any other situations deemed a technical by the referees
    8. Unsportsmanlike conduct by a non-player.
    9. A non-contact foul by a player.
    10. An intentional or flagrant contact foul while the ball is dead, except a foul by an airborne shooter.
  2. A player will automatically be ejected from the game after receiving two technical fouls. An official may call a technical foul at his or her discretion for any of the aforementioned reasons.
  3. After a team receives 3 conduct technical fouls in one game, the game will be called and a forfeit will be issued.
  4. 4 total technicals on same team will result in a forfeit

Team Fouls

  1. At 7 team fouls in a half, the 1 and 1 bonus will go into effect.
  2. Once a team has 10 team fouls, the double bonus will go into effect and the other team will automatically receive two free throws.
  3. Once the bonus is achieved, it will remain for the rest of the half. All team fouls from the second half will be transferred to OT play.
  4. EXCEPTION: A player control foul (offensive) never results in free throws, even if a team is in the bonus.

Any protest made must be addressed to the Intramural official immediately.

Judgment calls are not protest-able.

All protests must be issued in accordance with article XI of the Intramural Sports Constitution.

Player Interaction

Consistent infraction of this rule may lead to an ejection.

Any player who is creating an environment which any official deems as contrary to the goals of the Intramural Sports Program is subject to ejection.

Use of profanity directed at an official shall result in an immediate ejection.

Any misconduct executed by an official must be brought to the immediate attention of the IM Supervisor.

Any team or individual that fails to be ready for play at the scheduled time of the contest may forfeit to their opponent.

  1. Game Time is forfeit time.

Forfeited contests will not be rescheduled.

After a forfeit, the entire team will be suspended from all intramural sports until the $25 forfeit fee is paid.

After a team forfeits two contests in a sport, the team will be suspended until a second $25 forfeit fee is paid. In addition, the team will be removed from the league.

If a team must forfeit, the Intramurals office should be notified no later than 3pm the day of the contest. This will count as a default and not a forfeit.

ll participants must adhere to the Sportsmanship Rules Established by Article XVI of the Intramural Sports Constitution:

  1. Team captain is responsible for educating and informing all players and spectators affiliated with his/her team about the system.
  2. The officials working that game and or any intramural staff member will rate each team in each contest on sportsmanship.
  3. The intramural staff and officials rate teams and organizations on a 4 point rating system.
  4. To qualify for playoffs, a team must average at least a 3.0 over a minimum of three (3) games to be included in playoffs.
  5. Teams must also maintain an acceptable sportsmanship rating for each game throughout the playoffs in order to advance.

Rating System Criteria:

“4” – Some question of judgment or rule interpretation with minimal complaint.

“3” – Good game, but not perfect. Repeated question of judgment or complaints by team.

“2” – Highest rating a team can achieve with one unsportsmanlike call in softball, volleyball, flag football; yellow card in soccer; and a technical foul in basketball.

“1” – Consistent harassment of the officials. Highest rating a team can achieve with 2 unsportsmanlike conducts, technical fouls (not on the same participant), or yellow cards.

“0” – Includes threatening an employee. Forfeit includes any game in which a team is ejected for fighting and/or 3 unsportsmanlike penalties or technical fouls in a game.
