Advertising Major is for students planning careers in advertising and marketing communications. Students complete an advertising core along with up-to-date classes focusing on interest areas. These include social media marketing, creative strategies, research, and data analytics. Experiential learning projects focus on solving real-world marketing challenges within the classroom. Career opportunities range from account management and digital strategist to copywriting, media planning, and corporate marketing. Graduates work within advertising agency, corporate, nonprofit and governmental settings.

Journalism Major is for students planning careers in newspapers, television news, magazines, online or multimedia news outlets, photography, radio or social media. All students will receive hands-on multimedia training to prepare them for today's expanding media roles. Students will be qualified to work in a number of journalism jobs by the time they graduate.Students may be involved with anchoring, reporting and producing broadcasts; a sports news service; the campus newspaper; and field social media reporting. 

Public Relations Major is new at SDSU in fall 2016. It will prepare students for careers in public relations and marketing communications, a growing career area nationally and in South Dakota. The major addresses both economic and societal issues, emphasizes the importance of market research, and includes experiential learning opportunities. A Public Relations major will expand and enhance the career options available to students in one of the fastest-growing areas of all communication fields. Public relations as a stand-alone program is specialized to meet the high demands of the job of a public relations practitioner. Practitioners create, analyze, execute and evaluate communication strategies that can be applied in many industries and organizations, such as education, government, health care, public policy, small business and the military.
