2020 Fall Academic Calendar Adjustment

June 3, 2020

Greetings SDSU Students and Community –

This morning, the South Dakota Board of Regents announced adjustments to the 2020 Fall Academic Calendar. Instruction will now begin Aug. 19 and on-campus instruction will be completed by Thanksgiving. Labor Day, Native American Day and Veterans Day will be used as class days to accommodate the 70-class day schedule. The university will work to plan programming to appropriately celebrate and recognize those holidays.

The decision was made among the regents and the six presidents of the state’s public higher-education institutions in collaboration with South Dakota Department of Health guidance, the state epidemiologist and other health care providers.

Three identifying factors enforced the decision based on keeping students within communities and avoiding travel to limit any spread of COVID-19 from other areas, the impact of the traditional flu season and the potential for a second wave of COVID-19.

The new academic calendar is as follows:

  • Aug. 19: Start Date / Instruction Begins
  • Sept. 7: Labor Day = Class Day
  • Oct. 12: Native American Day = Class Day
  • Nov. 11: Veterans Day = Class Day
  • Nov. 25: Non-class Day
  • Nov. 26: Thanksgiving Holiday
  • Nov. 27: Non-class Day
  • Nov. 30 and Dec. 1: Non-class Days (Final Exam Prep Days)
  • Dec. 2-4 and 7-8: Final Exam Period (Online/Remote)

The university’s news release with more information can be found on

Information about the move-in day process for students living on campus is being finalized and will be shared in the next couple of weeks.

Employees will be given time off later in the year in lieu of the three holidays converted to class days.

Access to campus will be limited between Christmas and New Year’s Day to deep clean the campus and prepare for the spring semester that is scheduled to begin Jan. 11, 2021. Additional details about the cleaning week will be shared at a later date.

Thank you for your attention to this announcement. We hope that everyone is staying safe and your summer is off to a good start. Please continue to reference the JacksRBack website for additional information.
