Hobo Week Events
One Month Club Kickoff
Each year, the brave men and women of SDSU let their razors rust away and allow their beards and leg hair to grow unchecked for the month preceding Hobo Day. Weary Wil & Dirty Lil judge the resulting facial and leg hair (or lack thereof) during Rally at the Rails on Friday of Hobo Week. So, proud Hobos & Hoboettes—let it grow, let it grow. Look out for our sign-up event, one month prior to Hobo Week.
Paint the Town
The old adage says "go paint the town red." Here in Hobo country, we paint the town yellow and blue! We'll provide a window in the Brookings community. You provide the creative genius—or just do your best. It's the Hobo spirit that counts!
Be a part of a beloved hobo tradition while also enjoying a free meal with your friends in the home of a Brookings community member! Bum-A-Meal gives students the opportunity to connect with community members, faculty and alumni. Many of them have their own Hobo Day memories they’re excited to share with the next generation of dirty bums looking for a hot meal. Did we mention it’s free?
Registration opens September 23rd, 2019 at 8 AM
**Mr/Ms Homelycoming Pageant
The Mr/Ms Homelycoming Pageant is a competition featuring some of SDSU's most outgoing and brave men and women. Tickets can be purchased at Information Exchange in the Student Union. Doors open at 6:15 PM in the Performing Arts Center, show starts at 7:00pm.
Brought back from the ancient days of Hobo tradition when bums gathered from near and far for warmth under the flickering fire light, dancing in the moonlight and conversing with fellow hobos, the 2019 Hobo Day Committee welcomes you to the BumFire at 9:00 p.m. in The Backyard. Join Jack, the Barnyard Cadets, the Bum Band, and other special guests in an everlasting blaze. Hot chocolate will be served. Come early, stay late, and don’t forget to check out the Bummobile!
Be a part of a hobo tradition! The BumOver brings back the rich elements of past Hobo sleep-outs. Join us in the market in the University Student Union for a night filled with homemade shanties, yard games, and music by a live DJ!
Cardboard will be provided. Groups are encouraged to bring their own tools (duct tape, rope, markers, scissors, etc.) to bring their cardboard visions to life and create a real Hoboville in the Union Market! Structures will be judged promptly at 9:30 PM following shanty building, and the top three creations will be displayed (size permitting) in the University Student Union on Friday of Hobo Week.
Register for Hobolympics to be part of the glory, the tradition, and - if you’re good enough - the cash prizes! This event consists of relay races and other challenges intended for teams of four.
**Cavorts! Talent Show
Started in 1975, the Cavorts Talent Show is a showcase for student performers and the perfect start to any Hobo Day weekend! Tickets can be purchased at Information Exchange. Doors open at 6:15 PM in the Performing Arts Center, show starts at 7:00pm.
