Rodney Bell has served as head of the SDSU History Department since 1972. Fayne Bell has been a computer resource specialist with the University's Academic computer Technology Service since 1985. They have dedicated the scholarship to the memory of their infant son, Gregory drew Bell, who died a few weeks after his birth in 1962. The scholarship will be awarded to history majors beginning in the 2000-2001 school year who have completed at least one year of college and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA. The couple realized the importance of financial assistance in their work with the University and in helping their other four children fund college educations. "So many students have time consuming jobs outside the classroom. we hope that this will give a few individuals more time to concentrate on academics." Rod Bell said. According to the Bells, the scholarship is one way they can show their appreciation for the careers they have found at SDSU. "The Scholarship is an opportunity to give something back to an institution that has supported us over many years," Fayne Bell said. Establishing the scholarship became a family project enlisting the support of the couple's other children: Carolyn, Tom, Elizabeth and Kathleen.
