National History Day: South Dakota

The SDSU Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy, Religion, together with the Ag Heritage Museum, are proud sponsors of National History Day. For the history major not going into teaching, working with us on National History Day is an excellent way to develop grant-writing and fundraising skills. For the history teacher, there is no better way to distinguish your resume from the others than experience working with NHD. Every prospective administrator would love to see NHD brought to their school.

Annual Daschle Dialogues

As a graduate of our department, we have a lasting friendship with former Senate Majority Leader, Tom Daschle. During the Daschle Dialogues October 2014, he and the former republican Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott, paid a visit to the Intro to Government class.

October 2015, he brought former Secretary of State, Madeline Albright to SDSU. She spoke with our Political Science, Honors and Global Studies students. Our faculty and students also take advantage of the Daschle Career Papers, housed in Briggs Library. Political Science professor, Dr. Evren Celik-Wiltse, together with her student Zac Mitchell, jointly submitted and won a $7,500 award to research this summer the role of Daschle and South Dakota on the passing of NAFTA, and its impact on agriculture here as well as Mexico. They presented their findings to Dr. Albright and Sen. Daschle during their visit. It is their plan to turn the research into a co-authored publication.

Clubs and Activities

So many of our majors get involved with clubs and internships. These are both ways for professors and professionals to get to know you outside the classroom ad speak to critical traits, which might otherwise go unnoticed. What are prospective employers looking for? Ambition, drive, collegiality, adaptability, ability to learn, creativity, innovation, work ethic, and leadership. Do not just join a club-become an officer. Show off these skills to us so that we can later discuss it in your recommendation letter. We have so many options to choose from: History Club, Phi Alpha Theta (History's Honor Club), Political Science Club, Pre-Law Society, Model UN, ect…
