Briggs Library 40th Anniversary

Celebrating Hilton M. Briggs Library's 40th Anniversary

A place for scholarly and personal growth. A place for collaboration and individual study. And sometimes, even a place to catch a nap.

We have as many reasons to celebrate our 40th anniversary as there are occasions to use library resources! Since opening in the fall term of 1977, Briggs Library and its faculty and staff have helped students meet academic challenges and connected researchers with information. As one of the most visited facilities at South Dakota State University, the library offers a welcoming environment that encourages lifelong learning. Celebrate this milestone with us!

Join us as we celebrate our 40th anniversary!

Celebration Day - Thursday, September 14

We have a day of special events planned for students, faculty, staff and community members.

  • 11 am - 1 pm: Briggs Blast to the Past!  Students are welcome to stop by the Briggs Library lawn for some '70s era fun! Gear up for Hobo Day by tie-dyeing a bandana, or join a jump rope battle at noon for the chance to win $50 Hobo Dough!
  • 5 pm: Community Reception  The public is invited to a reception in the Main Level of Briggs Library, with hors d'oeuvres and beverages served. A short program begins at 6 pm with brief remarks from current and past library administrators. Booklets of the anniversary's essay collection (see below) will be freely available.
  • 6:30 pm: Wit of the Wosters  Our keynote event features South Dakota siblings Terry Woster, Jim Woster, Kevin Woster and Mary Alice Haug in a panel discussion. Storytelling runs in the family, as these SDSU alumni have had careers in journalism, public speaking, and writing. Join us as they share their thoughts on the impact of books, reading, and libraries.

Hilton M. Briggs Library Then & Now

Take a look at our gallery to see how Briggs Library has changed over the years.

We asked, and Jackrabbits responded! SDSU alumni, faculty and staff were invited to share essays about influential books and meaningful library experiences. Entertaining, reflective and nostalgic, the essays are as varied as the answers to the question, "What's your favorite book?" Browse the collection below, and check back for newly added essays!
