Briggs Library 40th Anniversary

Celebrating Hilton M. Briggs Library's 40th Anniversary

A place for scholarly and personal growth. A place for collaboration and individual study. And sometimes, even a place to catch a nap.

We have as many reasons to celebrate our 40th anniversary as there are occasions to use library resources! Since opening in the fall term of 1977, Briggs Library and its faculty and staff have helped students meet academic challenges and connected researchers with information. As one of the most visited facilities at South Dakota State University, the library offers a welcoming environment that encourages lifelong learning. Celebrate this milestone with us!

Join us as we celebrate our 40th anniversary!

Celebration Day - Thursday, September 14

We have a day of special events planned for students, faculty, staff and community members.

Hilton M. Briggs Library Then & Now

Take a look at our gallery to see how Briggs Library has changed over the years.

We asked, and Jackrabbits responded! SDSU alumni, faculty and staff were invited to share essays about influential books and meaningful library experiences. Entertaining, reflective and nostalgic, the essays are as varied as the answers to the question, "What's your favorite book?" Browse the collection below, and check back for newly added essays!

Whether you're near or far, you'll be able to see exhibits commemorating the 40th anniversary. Displays will be up throughout the building, and digital exhibits will be accessible through this website. Topics of the on-sight and online exhibits include:

  • History of SDSU libraries
  • Hilton M. Briggs, the building's namesake and former SDSU president
  • Past and present comparative photos of the library
  • Profiles of SDSU library directors
  • 40 books written by SDSU alumni and faculty
