Graduate School Newsletter - November 2022

Congratulations to Shelby Duncan for being selected as the winner of the Distinguished Master's Thesis Award! Shelby is a Spring 2022 graduate who earned her Master of Science degree in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. Shelby was given a monetary award and her thesis will be submitted for further consideration for the regional award through the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools.

Applications must be submitted electronically. Deadline: November 17, 2022.

Nominate a faculty member for this award. Deadline: December 1, 2022.

This year’s 3MT competition will be held in the Lewis and Clark Room, Student Union, on February 9, 2023 at 5 p.m. We encourage all graduate students to participate. Interested students must register no later than Friday, February 3, 2023. More detailed information will be sent out to registered students after that date. The Career Development competency area is your one stop shop for preparing to take your hard-earned degree and begin your career journey with confidence!

Below is a quick summary of each permanent module, how it’s offered, and how it can benefit you!

  • Earn one of four certificates about relevant topics to careers today, including:
    • Managing Technology and Remote Work in the Workplace
    • Conflict Resolution
    • Understanding Your Benefits
    • Time Management for Emerging Leaders
  • Gain access to more certificates on other important topics as well!

Learn how to stand out in the crowd by creating a brand for yourself on digital media platforms, through your resume, and more!

  • Learn about what resumes/CVs look like today and update (or create) yours to be focused and results producing.
  • Optional: schedule an appointment with a Career Coach through SDSU’s Career Development Center for 1:1 help.

Learn techniques to help you practice and prepare for a variety of interviews.

Learn valuable tips, tricks, and types of negotiating options as you prepare for your first professional job from a Harvard Business School professor, who had made a profession out of negotiation.

First-Generation Celebration

SDSU’S First-Generation Celebration will be located along the Student Union Main Street Tuesday, November 8 (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) and Wednesday, November 16 (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.). Whether you are a first-generation college student or not, join in the fun by participating in games, learning about pillars of people, and supporting your fellow students.
