Nicole Lounsbery


CONGRATULATIONS to our very own Director of the Graduate School, Dr. Nicole Lounsbery for being awarded the NAGAP Visionary Award. This national award is presented to an established leader in the higher education community who has demonstrated unique vision in the graduate enrollment management (GEM) profession, has developed and executed innovative strategy or led bold, cutting-edge, and successful initiatives that have influenced their own campus, university system, or the GEM community at large.

Dr. Lounsbery was recognized at the NAGAP conference held April 20-23. Please join us in celebrating her much deserved award! 🥳




Graduate School Spotlight

Shayanti Minj

Shayanti Minj – Speaker for the 10 a.m. Ceremony (College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering)

Shayanti Minj, a native of Deshbandhu para, Siliguri, India, graduated following the fall 2021 semester with a doctorate in biological sciences with a specialization in dairy sciences. Minj works as a food scientist with a plant-based food company based in San Francisco.

During Minj’s time at State, she developed a novel, spray-dried, dairy-based health formulation and a high-protein probiotic butter using whey proteins and encapsulated probiotics. She presented this work at several conferences and competitions. Minj won the American Dairy Science Association’s graduate student poster contest in dairy foods research. In addition, she received Sigma Xi’s best doctorate paper award and the Griffith Graduate Agriculture Research Award.

Minj was inducted into Gamma Sigma Delta, an honor society for agriculture students and those in related fields, in 2021.



Bikram Das – Speaker for the 5 p.m. Ceremony (College of Natural Sciences, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions)

Bikram Kumar Das, a native of Kathmandu, Nepal, is graduating with a doctorate in biological sciences with a specialization in microbiology and a certificate in data science.

While at State, he presented at numerous academic conferences and finished second in graduate oral presentation at the 2019 American Society of Microbiology-North Central Branch Conference. He was president of the Biology and Microbiology Graduate Student Association.

He conducted research on the microbial community in natural prairie soil and its role in the nitrogen cycle, especially nitrogen fixation. The work also identifies the shifts in microbial communities and their activity within soil systems in response to either seasonal changes or novel fertilization techniques.

The 3D research center is organizing a one-day workshop on “Translating Research Discovery into Marketplace Opportunity” on June 8 at Hilton Garden Inn, Downtown Sioux Falls.

This workshop is open to students, post-docs, researchers and faculty. Registration is free!  The registration deadline is May 20.

The Eastern South Dakota Research Symposium which is scheduled for June 15, 2022. This event brings together researchers from Sanford, SDSU, USD and Augustana to showcase current work and build collaborative relationships. The symposium is also a great networking opportunity for graduate students.
