Cloud Computing

The Department of Geography and Geospatial Sciences works closely with the University Networking and Research Computing Group to provide computing resources for our faculty and students through the cloud computing platform on campus. Specifically, we use about 15~20 virtual machines for our upper-level GIS courses. The students can connect to the virtual machines remotely via a client software named "VMware Horizon Client". These virtual machines are equipped with various professional software (e.g., ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, QGIS, GRASS GIS, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, MS SQL Server and so forth). At this moment, we are using these machines in two courses: GEOG 476/576 Web GIS and GEOG 477/577 Spatial Databases.
