Northwest Steam Tunnel/College Avenue

The tunnel project is bidding on April 3, 2018 and construction will begin in early May.  The target completion is August 2019.  The total project budget is $6 million.

May 24 Update Access to the Dairy Science parking lot and the adjacent buildings is now off of Medary.  The contractor continues to work from south to north, backfilling and restoring the site as they go.  The Testing Center and Ag Hall parking lot will be reopening by June 30th.  Until that time, parking will be available to the north of Dairy Science or to the north of the Ag Museum.  Coming from the north, pedestrians have access to the Testing Center and Ag Hall via the sidewalk along the west side of College Ave or through the Dairy Science building.

  • From May 29th to June 1st, the contractor will be replacing the sanitary sewer that serves the Dairy Plant, Dairy Bar, and Plant Science.  During that time, restrooms will be closed and we ask that occupants use the north wing of Diary Science and Biostress or Hort-Forestry.  We also ask that other water use is kept to a minimum to not cause issues with the installation of the new sanitary line.
  • There will also be a water outage from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM on May 31st for the Intramural Building and the Testing Center in order to relocate a water main.
  • A steam outage is scheduled from 5:00 PM June 7th through 5:00 PM June 11th
  • Looking ahead, North Campus Drive will be closed in front of Animal Science starting after move in week and wrapping up sometime in December.  During that time, traffic will be routed to the south through Jackrabbit Blvd and the temporary Medary access.

May 15 Update: The tunnel project is underway. The contractor is wrapping up the temporary access off of Medary to get to the Dairy Science parking lot and Jackrabbit Blvd.  Starting May 16th, the contractor will begin putting up their site fence on the south end of College Ave and begin removals.  They will continue to work north throughout the summer and fall.

The Testing Center and Ag Hall parking lot will be inaccessible starting on May 16th and reopening by June 30th.  During that time, parking will be available to the north of Dairy Science or to the west of Medary, north of the Ag Museum.  Coming from the north, pedestrians will have access to the Testing Center and Ag Hall via the sidewalk along the west side of College Ave or through the Dairy Science building.  The access to the Dairy Science parking lot will switch over to the new access from Medary on May 16th as well.  It will remain like that throughout the duration of the project.

From May 29th to June 1st, the contractor will be replacing the sanitary sewer that serves the Dairy Plant, Dairy Bar, and Plant Science.  Restrooms will be closed and we ask that occupants use the north wing of Diary Science and Biostress or Hort-Forestry.  We also ask that other water use is kept to a minimum to not cause issues with the installation of the new sanitary line.

March 2, 2018 UpdateIn order to make necessary steam service upgrades, we will construct a new tunnel and install new steam/condensate service along College Ave from the Testing Center to Animal Science Complex. As a part of this, and with Precision Ag Project coming shortly after, we are planning to permanently close down College Ave to create a pedestrian courtyard between future Precision Ag and McFadden.

The parking lot north of Dairy Micro will be redesigned, and an entrance will be added off of Medary Ave. This will create a safer pedestrian access by eliminating vehicle traffic on a busy pedestrian corridor

The tunnel/Steam line project will take place this summer and be completed in late fall, 2018.

Precision Ag will is currently anticipated to start in spring/summer of 2019.

March 1, 2016 Update: The Northwest Tunnel project will be bidding in late March, targeting a start date around the end of April.  Any work done before graduation will only cause some minor disruptions.  Then the bulk of the work will begin after graduation with North Campus Drive being shut down for the majority of the summer.  By the start of school in the fall, North Campus Drive will be opened back up.
