Record number to be at engineering career fair

Event Details

At least 150 firms will be on campus Oct. 8 for the Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering Career Fair, which is open to South Dakota State University engineering students and alumni.

“The continued strong engagement by companies in this year’s career fair is another sign of the ongoing need for well-trained engineering graduates in the workforce,” said Bruce Berdanier, dean of the college. “While this event is primarily designed for current students, we welcome our alumni as well. Many of the firms have specifically asked about alumni attendance.”

It’s the largest turnout ever for the biannual event, according to Becky Pistulka, event coordinator with the college. The previous mark was 128. This is the second year for the event to be held in the Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium on the north end of campus. The 148 recruiters from 16 states will have booths on the club and suite levels.

The event typically draws 450 to 500 students.

The event is free and no preregistration is required. Entrance is through the Premier Bank gates on the football stadium’s west side.

While the lion’s share of the companies come from South Dakota (53) and Minnesota (38), the list of recruiters stretch from Atlanta to Fort Worth, Texas, to Meridian, Idaho. To find a list of participating firms click on the career fair tab on the website www.sdstate/engineering.

The list states if the company is looking for full-time or part-time help or interns.

In addition to dozens of engineering and construction firms, there are a handful of firms one would not associate with engineering, such as Mutual of Omaha, the Marines and Carforsale.com.

Alums are asked to follow the same dress code as students—Suits or dress pants and polo shirts.

The career fair runs from 1 to 5 p.m. Thirty-seven firms are staying around the next day to conduct interviews.
