Language Makes Us Human
Language is what we use to shape the world, and different languages shape the world differently. Through our language, we talk about and understand ourselves, our cultures, and our world. We engage in language study so that we can access culturally specific stories and perspectives that we would never know otherwise. Ultimately, our goal is to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that allow us to communicate effectively and appropriately with our fellow humans, regardless of language and culture. In light of the MLA 2020 Presidential Theme: Being Human, we invite SDWLA members to reflect on the role of language teaching in defining what it means to be human in a changing world.
