In this multimedia presentation, author Phyllis Cole-Dai will share some of the stories behind her writing of Beneath the Same Stars, a novel of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 (One Sky Press, 2018). Based on actual events, the book is seen through the eyes of Sarah Wakefield, an infamous survivor of the uprising.
During the presentation, the author will lead the audience on a journey from a family cemetery in a dense woods of North Kingstown, Rhode Island; to the ruins of the Upper Sioux Agency near Granite Falls, Minnesota; to the kitchen table of a Dakota elder in Peever, South Dakota. A largely forgotten history that still haunts this region of the country will be explored along the way.
This event is open to the public and members of the campus community.
