Event Details

Join us as we welcome a rare collection of Dakota language newspapers into the SDSU Archives and Special Collections at Briggs Library.

The Dakota Friend newspapers date back to 1850 – 1852 and were printed in St. Paul, MN. These materials are one of the first Dakota language publications.

A program will be held to recognize this unique collection. A reception with appetizers and beverages will take place at the SDSU Archives, and a presentation titled “Translating the Dakota Literary Tradition” will be given by Dr. Sarah Hernandez. Attendees can also view an exhibit about the newspapers.

This public program is supported by a generous donation from Mildred K. Hugghins.

Briggs Library is located at 1300 N. Campus Drive. The SDSU Archives is on the upper level in Room 241. Free parking is available to the north of the library in Lot 164.
