Nestling down in a wooded valley amidst the range of the North Black Hills is the charming home of G. W. Mossing. Here Mossing made the home for her husband and children that earned for her the recognition of 1944 South Dakota Eminent Homemaker.
Mossing was born in Saginaw, Michigan, Feb. 24, 1875. She came to the Black Hills in a covered wagon with her parents when she was five years old. She has resided continuously in Lawrence County since that time. She attended high school in Deadwood and in 1892 was married to Gunner W. Mossing.
Their first farm was in the St. Onge valley east of Spearfish where they engaged in general farming and livestock raising. In 1920 they purchased their present farm seven miles west of Spearfish.
The Mossings had three children.
A neighbor says of Mossing, “Her ideals as a girl must have been high for it is so easy for her to stay by worthwhile things.” Her ambitions for her children have been lofty and the moving kind that urged them to attainment.
Mossing is a charter member of the first home extension club organized in Lawrence County and has served as chairman, vice-chairman and secretary. She has won numerous trophies with canning and other home products at the county achievement days throughout the years. She is an active member of the Methodist Church of Spearfish.
Mossing, who had been ill for several years, died on Aug. 22, 1945.
In 1949 she underwent surgery, but recuperated despite her advanced age. She was one of five living charter members of her home extension club who ere honored at a 25th anniversary party in 1950.
