Call to Order

Steve Hietpas called the meeting to order at approximately 9:35 a.m.

Approve Minutes of April 21, 2016 spring meeting

Ben Pierson moved and Joe Dold seconded to accept minutes. Motion Carried.  

Planning 50th Anniversary of CPSS

Summer of 2017 will mark the 50th Anniversary of CPSS. Plans to commemorate the milestone will be added to the agenda for the fall 2017 meeting.  
-Action - Hietpas to add to agenda 

Coordinator: The Coordinator’s Report was included in the meeting packet. See the report for full details. Some of the highlights of the report included:

Summer 2016: Faculty and Student Summer Projects/Research Update

Hietpas served on numerous committees for IEEE and CPSS
Hietpas will be stepping down from IEEE PES Scholarship Committee. He is looking for two new people to serve as replacements; workload includes reviewing scholarship applications. Contact Hietpas if you are interested.
Students interested in power: Four senior design projects in power. 14 students in Power Systems class plus 19 taking the class remotely from School of Mines.
Hansen completed a great first year at SDSU and will be presenting a paper on solar panel reliability at an upcoming conference.
Hansen is the new as advisor to Eta Kappa Nu. Hietpas has been the advisor since the late 1990’s and many past and present students thank him for his guidance.
Ni achieved a grant from NASA and also received a University of Rhode Island Excellence in Doctoral Research Award.

Update on extra FY2016 Funds Distribution
-Challenging due to release of scholarship info until August/September.
-If scholarship fund of CPSS is not distributed, it grows for next year

Attendees reviewed Memorandum of Agreements for CPSS General Scholarship
-Nate Jones moved and Chad Orris seconded to approve the memorandum. Motion Carried.

Attendees reviewed Memorandum of Agreements for Center for Power Systems Studies Scholarship
-Joe Dold moved and Larry DeKramer seconded to approve the memorandum. Motion Carried.

New Business

2016 Conference Post Review
-50+ attendees, up from ~30 last time. Possible reason: Earlier reminders, improved topics
-Areas to improve: The room and backlight of the screen
-Action: Hietpas to post presentations online for attendees (pending presenter approval)
Reminder: If you attended conference, and wish to receive a certificate, indicating number of PhDs earned for renewing of PE License, please contact Dr. Hietpas via email.

2015-2016 Financial Report (Nate Jones)
-Report was checked in detail by attendees
-Nate Jones moved and Frank Kornbaum seconded to accept the proposed budget. Motion Carried.

MSE Program – Power Track
-Masters of Engineering – 30 required credits. In person or online. 6 students enrolled right now. More details were provided in a handout.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 11:10 a.m. - with a motion by Mark Weismantel and seconded by Larry DeKramer.  Motion carried.
