The SDSU EDA University Center mission is to foster innovative economic development throughout the State of South Dakota by utilizing university resources, forging strategic collaborative partnerships, and addressing industry-driven needs. Our services aim to fulfill this mission through 1) technical consulting, 2) business planning and market assessments, 3) Applied Research and 4) Workforce Development and Short Course Training.
- Technical Consulting
The University Center offers technical consulting services to all regional stakeholders. We have a network of technical experts at our University, and we strive to provide relevant, meaningful, and timely outcomes and recommendations to address your specific product/process development, business, engineering, economic, and environmental questions.
***COVID-19 INDOOR ENVIRONMENT ASSESSMENTS FOR BUSINESSES**
In this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University Center, is excited to be able to provide holistic technical consulting services for existing businesses to determine how they may reduce the likelihood of person-to-person contamination within an indoor environment.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states the coronavirus virus spreads very easily and sustainably between people who are in close contact with another, i.e., within 6 feet; through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks; in which the droplets are inhaled by a non-infected person.
Recent studies have shown that droplets and aerosols entrained in air can travel more than the stated 6 feet in an indoor environment and potentially 20 feet or more. This suggests that an individual may become infected by a non-adjacent carrier of the virus if the airflow within the facility is implemented improperly. Conversely, it is hypothesized that a facility’s Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system can be designed and/or retrofitted to inhibit the ability for the virus to spread. Examples include inducing the airflow to reduce the droplet spread, disinfecting the return air using UV rays or antiviral aerosols, and providing appropriate fresh air to the indoor environment.
As part of our services, we will conduct an on-site visit to your business to assess the ventilation of your indoor environments, quantify airflow, and provide recommendations for reducing the risk of spread of COVID-19 and other airborne viruses.
