Richard Barreth worked as an Industrial Engineer for Allis Chalmers Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for four years following his graduation from South Dakota State College. He earned an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1962 while working full time. He then spent seven years with the Collins Radio Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, rising to the position of Manager of Material Control.
