James Mentele was employed at Dow Corning as a mathematician in Midland, Michigan, following his graduation from South Dakota State University. In 1967, he returned to SDSU to obtain an M.S. in physics and then returned to Dow Corning as a physicist. He worked at Dow Corning in various research and IT positions, retiring in 2001 as a senior information scientist and continued as a scientist emeritus. In 2001, he started Teos, Inc. to do consulting in text and data mining and mathematical modeling. He also spent time as a senior research fellow at the Central Michigan University Research Corporation and with Global Language Translation and Consulting as a director. Mentele was involved with a number of startup companies and was a board member of Mt. Marty College in Yankton; the SDSU Engineering Advisory Board; the ACLU of Michigan, Central Michigan Branch; and the People to People International, Midland Branch.
