James A. Larson had 39 years of professional experience of which 34 were with Severdrup, Parcel and Associated, Inc., a consulting firm in St. Louis, Missouri, which designed major bridge and tunnel projects, marine facilities and environment systems. As the senior project manager and chief geotechnical engineer, he provided professional consultation and design on some of the most complex engineering problems in the world.

Larson, a two-time winner of the Federal Design Achievement Award, was known for his unique method of complex problem solving which were creative, practical, simple and successful. Some of the projects he worked on included: the super collider (its transition to conventional construction); the Fort McHenry tunnel project in Baltimore, Maryland and the rapid transit for Seattle. He also worked on the Bridge of the Americas over the Panama Canal.
