Biography

Dr. Brown is actively involved with both graduate and undergraduate education at SDSU, having taught ten undergraduate courses, five graduate courses, and various seminars. Dr. Brown has built a comprehensive fisheries research program with primary foci in fish ecology, sport fish management, and fish culture. His research not only provides scholarly contributions but also contributes to teaching and service functions. As major advisor, he has directly advised and mentored 34 graduate students and numerous undergraduate students; those students have garnered 46 honors and awards. He has generated over $13 M in contracts and grants, authored or co-authored over 140 scientific articles, 10 book chapters, 40 technical or popular articles, and has presented or co-presented over 220 platform papers and posters. His co-edited book “Analysis and Interpretation of Freshwater Fisheries Data,” (961 pp.) currently in revision, has been used in professional practice and graduate-level instruction in 35 countries. Dr. Brown was an elected president of the American Fisheries Society North Central Division and two chapters, has served as chair or member of numerous professional committees, boards and panels, and is a regular reviewer of scientific journal articles, book products, and federal proposals. Dr. Brown has been honored with the F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Research from SDSU, Canon Intellectual Property Commercialization Award from SDSU, and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Fisheries Society.
