Biography

Dr. Perry is an Assistant Professor and Nutrition Biology Researcher. Her primary research focus is to understand metabolic disease states (sarcopenia, obesity, diabetes) and develop diet therapies that lead to optimal nutritional health. Dr. Perry engages in human clinical trials to achieve her research goals and current research efforts include: (i) evaluating the DASH diet on metabolic and muscular health in obese older adults and (ii) ceramides as a predictor for gestational diabetes. Previous research endeavors included understanding micronutrient metabolism in various diverse and at-risk populations such as pregnant and lactating women and women of differing ethnicities.
Dr. Perry teaches both undergraduate and graduate nutritional sciences courses, that include human nutrition, maternal and child nutrition, and nutrition and human performance.

Title: Ceramide as a predictor for gestational diabetes

Goals: (1) Apply mass spectrometry-based lipidomics to quantify plasma and lipoprotein ceramides during early, mid, and late pregnancy and compare these concentrations to changes in glucose tolerance as pregnancy advances. (2) Determine whether ceramides are predictive for gestational diabetes (GDM) and test the predictive value in an independent cohort. These studies will add new important knowledge into the pathophysiology of GDM. Additionally, the discovery of ceramide as a prognostic tool represents a breakthrough approach in monitoring GDM development and progression in all pregnant women that will in turn lead to early diagnosis and early intervention. If these data show that ceramide is associated with maternal insulin resistance and serves as a predictor for GDM, the next step will be to determine targeted therapeutic methods (e.g. pharmacological/nutritional) for reducing ceramide concentrations throughout pregnancy, thus reducing the risk for GDM.

Area(s) of Research

A primary goal of my research focus is to understand metabolic health in diverse and at-risk human populations and develop diet therapies that improve nutritional health. The overall purpose of this goal is to generate data that will scientifically inform the development of dietary patterns and nutrient intake recommendations that enhance the life span and promote the overall health and well-being of various human populations. To achieve this goal two primary approaches are used: 1. Human dietary intervention/controlled-feeding studies are used to investigate dose-response relationships between nutrient intake from a varied whole-diet and validated biomarkers of nutrient and health status. 2. A systems-biology approach is employed to assess biochemical, physiologic, and reproductive changes as they relate to nutrient metabolism and transport. These approaches are useful in understanding the role that diet plays in human nutritional health of differing populations.
