Biography

Dr. Aritra Banerjee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, SD. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) in 2017. His research interests include bio-inspired geotechnics, impacts of climate change, unsaturated and expansive soils, and numerical modeling of complex geotechnical systems. His research interests are aligned with the current emphasis on studying the effects of climate change to develop resilient civil infrastructures, such as dams, levees, embankments and pavements.

Before joining SDSU, Dr. Banerjee worked at the University of Delaware as an Assistant Professor. He developed close relations with the faculty in Coastal Engineering and received grants related to Coastal Geotechnics. He was also a Research Scientist in Fort Worth, Texas where he was part of various research projects funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Texas Department of Transportation, US DOT-funded regional center – Tran-SET, US Army Corps of Engineers, and private agencies like TenCate, Inc. During the same time, he had served as the Associate Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry-University Co-operative Research Center (I/UCRC) on Composites in Civil Infrastructure (CICI) at UTA.

Dr. Banerjee has an active Professional Engineer license in Civil Engineering. He is currently a member of the Transportation Research Board committee on Mechanics and Drainage of Saturated and Unsaturated Geomaterials (AKG40) and ASCE Geo-Institute’s Committee on Unsaturated Soils, where he is involved in creating an awareness of the importance of these fields in enhancing the resilience of critical and non-critical civil infrastructure in the nation. Dr. Banerjee has published several scholarly records including 57 publications, including 3 Book Chapters, 18 Journal articles, and 37 Geotechnical Special Publications/Conference Proceedings, and has 674 citations from his research publications (as of January 27, 2024). Dr. Banerjee is a reviewer for funded research proposals and top-tier journals in geotechnical engineering.

Currently, Dr. Banerjee is actively looking for funded master's and doctoral students interested in working on advanced problems in biogeotechnics, climate change, unsaturated soil mechanics, innovative soil stabilization techniques, and the development of resilient infrastructure. He has multiple research projects in those areas of research. Interested candidates may fill out the form (Link: https://forms.gle/CwwUE8gHCXbnUrtq5).
