Dairy Judging

SDSU returns to World Dairy Expo to compete in the National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. Team consisted of Ashley Holst, Owen Scheffler, Morgan Wingert and Maggie Molitor.

  1. Team highlights:
    1. Second-place team for Jersey
    2. Fifth-place team for Ayrshire
    3. Fifth-place team for Holstein
    4. Eighth-place team for Brown Swiss
    5. Ninth-place team for Guernsey
    6. 10th-place team overall
  2. Individual highlights:
    1. Ashley Holst placed seventh in Jersey.
    2. Owen Scheffler placed sixth in Guernsey, ninth in Holstein and 10th in Milking Shorthorn. He placed ninth overall in placings and ninth overall (placings plus reasons), earning an All-American award.

Vernon County Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest – SDSU sent two teams to compete at the Vernon County Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. Teams consisted of Ashley Holst, Owen Scheffler, Morgan Wingert and Maggie Molitor for Team A and Wyatt Zehr, Allison Wright and Makenna Skiff for Team B.

    1. Team A placed sixth overall, third in Brown Swiss, fifth in Guernsey, second in Jersey and fourth in Milking Shorthorns.
    2. Team B placed ninth overall and third in Guernsey.
  3. Individual highlights:
    1. Owen Scheffler placed seventh in reasons and seventh overall. Owen placed fifth in Milking Shorthorn, ninth in Guernsey and sixth in Brown Swiss.
    2. Morgan Wingert placed 10th in Milking Shorthorn and eighth in Jersey.
    3. Ashley Holst placed ninth in Jersey and fifth in Brown Swiss.
    4. Wyatt Zehr placed eighth in Brown Swiss.
    5. Makenna Skiff placed eighth in Guernsey.
Dairy Cattle Judging Team 1

SDSU competed in the North American International Livestock Exposition Invitational Dairy Judging Contest in Louisville, Kentucky. The team consisted of Ashley Holst, Owen Scheffler, Morgan Wingert and Maggie Molitor.

    5. First-place team for Guernsey
    6. Fourth-place team for Holstein
  2. Individual highlights:
    1. Individually, Maggie Molitor placed 10th in Ayrshire.
    2. Morgan Wingert placed fifth in Guernsey and Holstein.
    3. Owen Scheffler placed fourth in Guernsey and 10th overall.

2023 Spring

The South Dakota State Dairy Cattle Judging Teams competed at the Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest in affiliation with the Fort Worth Stock show in Texas show on Jan. 15, 2023. The first team consisting of Morgan Wingert, Margaret Moliter, Owen Scheffler and Ashley Holst placed third out of nine teams. The team excelled in the Brown Swiss breed by taking first place overall. In this breed, Wingert was first, Moliter was second, Holst was seventh, and Scheffler was eighth. In the Holstein breed, the team placed second with Wingert being sixth and Moliter taking eighth place. Individually we had a great contest with Wingert placing third overall and Moliter placing seventh overall. The second team, consisting of Alyson Dieball, Makenna Skiff, Allison Wright and Lauren Steffl, placed sixth overall. This team excelled at the Jersey breed, placing third overall. As individuals, Skiff placed third individually and Diebal ninth. In the Brown Swiss Breed, they placed fifth, and in the Holstein breed, sixth. The SDSU teams were coached by SDSU dairy science alumnus Cole Hoyer.
