Federal regulations require South Dakota State University to disclose whether its degree programs meet U.S. jurisdictions’ educational requirements for licensure (668.43(a)(5)(v) and 668.43(c)).

South Dakota State University also maintains state authorization information for students and prospective students.

Professional Licensure by State

Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to challenge the national certifying examination for athletic trainers through the Board of Certification.

The SDSU Athletic Training program and all of its course requirements meet the national education standards mandated by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Only by going through a CAATE-accredited program can a student challenge the national certifying examination through the BOC.

Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: Currently, there are no certification or licensure requirements for student personnel professionals. Students who successfully complete this 48-credit hour specialization will earn a Master of Science in Counseling and Human Resource Development specializing in College Counseling. Upon successful completion of the core requirements, and those of the College Counseling specialization, and, with the successful completion of the comprehensive written and oral examinations, graduates are endorsed as student affairs professionals.

Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: The specialization in Marriage and Family Counseling is designed to meet the requirements of the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners. Graduates of this specialization are eligible for certification as a Marriage and Family Therapist after completion of certification requirements as outlined by the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners.

Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: All Master of Science students are eligible to begin the process for the National Certified Counselor certification by taking the NCE six months before or after they graduate.

Students specializing in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling are eligible to begin the process for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor certification by taking the CRC exam after a student has completed 75% of coursework or after graduation.

Graduation from this program does not grant immediate licensure as a counselor. Licensure differs by state and is obtainable by completing additional client contact hours after graduation. Students are responsible for researching licensure requirements for the state in which they plan to practice.

Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: All Master of Science students are eligible to begin the process for the National Certified Counselor certification by taking the NCE six months before or after they graduate.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization is designed to meet the requirements of the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners. Graduates of this specialization are eligible for training supervisee status under the South Dakota Board of Examiners for Counselors. Once graduates complete an approved plan for the remainder of the supervised clinical experience, they are eligible for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Graduation from this program does not grant immediate licensure as a counselor.

It is ideally suited for already certified teachers seeking to further develop their skills and for those who work in a role where certification is not an issue such as post-secondary education and staff development.

Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: Candidates completing the SDSU M.Ed. program in Educational Administration seeking a principal's endorsement are required to hold a valid teaching certificate from South Dakota and meet licensure requirements. Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: The program prepares students to apply for the Certified Housing Counselor (CHC) and the Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC) certifications, which are appropriate to meet the needs of military spouses, active duty service members, civilians providing services and retired military or civilians in the areas of financial and housing counseling.

Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: For South Dakota Licensure and 7-12 family and consumer sciences endorsement a student must provide proof of content knowledge via 18 semesters hours of coursework (six semester hours in nutrition and wellness, six semester hours in consumer and resource management, three semester hours in human development and three semester hours in family studies) OR passing score on the PRAXIS FCS content exam. A 7-12 student teaching experience and passing score on the PRAXIS PLT or PPAT are also required. Additional teacher certification requirements include successful completion of the Indians of North America requirement and required Suicide Awareness training. Professional Licensure Disclosure Statement: Graduates of the SDSU Human Sciences – Family Financial Planning program can gain eligibility to sit for the CFP Certification Exam. SDSU does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM title and CFP® (with flame logo) certification marks. CFP® Certification is granted only by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to those persons who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered program, have met its ethics, experience and examination requirements.

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and CFP® (with flame logo), which it awards to individuals who successfully complete initial and ongoing certification requirements. The South Dakota State University Nutrition & Dietetics Internship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). ACEND is the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND accredited Nutrition & Dietetics Internship at SDSU are eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credentialing exam to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). In most states, graduates also must obtain licensure or certification to practice. For more information about state licensure requirements, visit Commission on Dietetic Registration State Licensure. South Dakota (SD) is among 46 states that have enacted legislation regulating the practice of dietetics. State licensure and state certification are separate from the registration exam by CDR. The SD codified law and administrative rules regarding dietetics and nutrition and the state licensure process are found at SD Legislature Legislative Research Council. Application information for the SD Licensed Nutritionist process is available at SD Board of Medical & Osteopathic Examiners. Graduates of the Nutrition and Dietetics Internship who are issued a verification statement are eligible to apply for a temporary SD Licensed Nutritionist license which is good for 1 year. Successful passing of the CDR examination for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists is required for application to be issued permanent SD Licensed Nutritionist status.
