SDSU Extension is one mode of outreach utilized by South Dakota State University. The mission of SDSU extension is to bring educational programs and research-based information to the citizens of South Dakota with the goal of improving vitality and sustainability through diverse, multi-faceted, and educational programming. It works with academic departments and the Agricultural Experiment Station to provide unbiased, science-based knowledge focused on issues and needs. Extension has five programs areas, two of which are part of the Department of Consumer Sciences: Community Development and Personal and Family Finance.
Community Development Program
Horizons is a guided experience that builds community capacity through individualized coaching and strategic planning. To date, Horizons has been delivered in more than 40 rural South Dakota communities.
Family & Personal Finance Programs
Family and Personal Finance focuses on tools and principles of personal financial management. Financial management is an on-going process that requires gaining new knowledge throughout the life cycle.
