About Distance Learning
The Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains IDEA) is a consortium offering fully online graduate programs. Each university brings a unique strength to the multi-institution academic programs. In a multi-institution degree program, you apply, and are admitted at one university; enroll in all your courses at that university; and, graduate or receive a certificate from that university. However, your online courses are taught by the best faculty in the discipline from several universities. The curriculum has been specially adapted to ensure that students receive the same quality of education as an on-campus course. These courses do not have regular meeting schedules, but they are set within the confines of a semester and students are still required to meet deadlines as outlined by the instructor. Students will interact with instructors and other students through e-mail, online chats, discussion boards and other methods.
Whether people live in Brookings or halfway around the world, online programs make learning an advanced degree a possibility. You can now apply online for any of our graduate programs.
A common price is charged for all courses across the Great Plains Human Sciences institutions. Costs are the same for in-state and out-of state students.
The common price for the 2014-2015 academic year (fall, spring and summer) is $515 per credit hour. Costs may change on an annual basis. The common price includes all tuition and fees. Books and other course materials are not included. No other course fees are charged. The application fee for domestic students is $35.

GPIDEA, an inter-institutional academic alliance, allows institutions working together to provide fully online programs that are greater in reach and significance than any single institution could field alone.
The Alliance was founded in 1994 capitalizing on the institutional resources and expertise of major research universities to sponsor in high-demand programs that are delivered through online learning technologies.
