SDSU Introduces PRSSA

In the fall of 2016, SDSU made Public Relations available as a major under the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, so faculty was eager to start a club that aligned specifically with the new major. SDSU formed their PRSSA chapter in the spring of 2017, which recently became active with members and events the following fall semester.

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is an industry recognized club and was founded in 1967 and now has over 300 chapters in the United States. The PRSSA mission is to serve its members by enhancing their knowledge of public relations and providing access to professional development opportunities. PRSSA helps students launch their careers with opportunities to gain education and networking skills with both their peers and professionals.

Here at SDSU, there are seven members active in the club with professor Marina Hendricks as the faculty advisor and senior Chase Knutson elected as club president. “We are always excited to welcome more, but we are satisfied with the smaller group,” said member Tessa Kopren. "In the future, the club hopes to continue to grow and become more involved with the community, with expectations of starting their very own mini PR firm also," said Kopren.

Currently, the PRSSA club is hosting Provember, otherwise known as Professional November. Provember is a series of events in the month of November offering professional building workshops to help students with recruitment, resumes, cover letters, portfolios and linkedIn training  to land an internship or professional career after graduation.

On Nov. 8, as part of Provember, the club gave students the opportunity to get a professional headshot taken of themselves. “Headshots are great when you are job or internship searching. They can help make your LinkedIn and social media sites stand out. They are also great to have in hand, because you never know, your new employer may want to do a press release on you,” said Kopren.

The Club usually meets in Yeager Hall once every two weeks on Thursdays at 5 P.M. For any further information about Provember and upcoming events, or if interested in joining PRSSA, contact club Advisor Hendricks, President Knutson or member Kopren.
