Teaching Certification Program

Graduate Teaching Assistant Certification Program

The South Dakota State University Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, in cooperation with the Office of Academic Affairs and the Graduate School, provide graduate teaching assistants with a wide array of professional development opportunities and an opportunity to achieve a Graduate Teaching Certificate of Excellence and a Graduate Teaching Certificate of Highest Excellence. 

Through this certification program the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning hopes to assist departments with the enhancement of the level of instruction provided by SDSU Graduate Teaching Assistants and ensure high standards of quality for our students.  This program will provide Graduate Teaching Assistants the opportunity to gain recognition for their participation and completion of specific professional development opportunities.  Upon successful completion Graduate Teaching Assistants will be invited to a reception to publicly recognize their outstanding accomplishments.

In order to receive this distinction, Graduate Teaching Assistants are required to:

Graduate Teaching Certificate of Excellence

  • Complete a minimum of five (5) Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning Graduate Teaching Assistants Workshops (GTA Orientation can be included as a workshop.).
  • Complete a class observation and feedback session with the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning’s Assistant Director To schedule, email Shelly.Bayer@sdstate.edu .
  • Submit an original class syllabus on a course determined in consultation with the CETL Assistant Director.
  • Submit a final statement of teaching philosophy at the completion of the three previous criteria.

Graduate Teaching Certificate of Highest Excellence

  • Complete all requirements for the Graduate Teaching Certificate of Excellence. 
  • Complete a minimum of three (3) Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning Graduate Teaching Assistants Workshops (GTA Orientation can be included as a workshop.)
  • Complete an additional class observation and feedback session with the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning’s Assistant Director.  To schedule, email Shelly.Bayer@sdstate.edu .
  • Submit two (2) items of additional evidence to demonstrate teaching effectiveness determined in consultation with the CETL Assistant Director.

The items required for submission are elements typically found in professional portfolios.  Upon completion of the Graduate Teaching Certificate of Excellence and Graduate Teaching Certificate of Highest Excellence, Graduate Teaching Assistants will have created the standard elements of a professional portfolio that will benefit them in the employment process.  

 

Requirement Deadlines

At the end of each spring semester, a ceremony honoring those who have completed the requirements for the Graduate Teaching Certificate of Excellence or the Graduate Teaching Certificate of Highest Excellence for that academic year will be held.

To be eligible for this distinction, please abide by the following deadline:

   - Deadline for Submittals for the Academic Year 2018-2019: Monday, April 8, 2019 by 5:00 pm

   - Certification Ceremony for Academic Year 2018-2019: Friday, April 26, 2019 at 9:00am in the Hobo Day Gallery of the SDSU Student Union
