Mission and Objectives

To be a nationally recognized center of excellence in biologics research.  We aim to conduct translational research in nutraceuticals, probiotics, vaccines and diagnostics.

  • Development of nutraceuticals and probiotics to improve human/animal health.
  • Development of novel vaccines, immunotherapies & assays to improve human/animal health.

Our research team is composed of a unique multidisciplinary group of successful scientists and includes collaboration with a wide range of industry partners. The synergism achieved by this collaboration will advance human and animal health at the regional, national and global level by accelerating biomedical and veterinary discoveries that will lead to the development of novel biologies for use in human and veterinary medicine. The specific objectives are:

Objective 1: Development of nutraceuticals and probiotics to improve human health. Using a humanized pig model, a probiotic discovery pipeline, and clinical trials, teams from SDSU, Sanford, Profile and other industry partners will develop digestive health-improving diets and probiotic mixes for use in enhancing human health.

Objective 2: Development of novel vaccines and antibodies/assays to improve human/animal health. Using novel vaccine delivery platforms, and diagnostic- and therapeutic-development platforms, teams from SDSU and USD will work on research and development of novel vaccines, therapeutic antibodies and diagnostic reagents and assays, targeting infectious disease agents at the human-animal interface. The SD livestock industry also depends heavily on these technologies.
