For our alumni

The COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES is the heart of South Dakota State University.  Nearly 2,500 students choose a major in our college, and virtually all SDSU students take general education courses through our college at some point.  That’s a lot of students. This growth in students has led to a growth in the college, and we’re proud of our recent accomplishments, including:

  • The creation of the School of Design, which offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Architecture, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, and Studio Art;
  • Creation of the School of Performing Arts, an organizational structure that shares expertise and experience in music, theatre and dance;
  • A new master’s program in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology;
  • New undergraduate majors in Chemistry Education, Community and Regional Planning, and Public Relations;
  • Our certificate program in Experiential Learning, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate hands-on, outside-the-classroom learning;
  • A number of new undergraduate minors designed to make our students more competitive in the labor market upon graduation;
  • Student-led work teams from our Department of Architecture that designed and built the End of the Line community area in Mobridge, S.D.;
  • Our core campus mass spectrometry facility for Chemistry;
  • Additional fundraising for the Pride of the Dakotas marching band, which has taken part in events across the nation, from presidential inaugurations to the Tournament of Roses Parade;
  • The Daschle Dialogues speaker series, which has brought public figures such as former U.S. Senator Thomas Daschle, an SDSU alumnus, and guests such as former U.S. Senator Trent Lott, and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and noted journalist Tom Brokaw to campus; and
  • A planned addition to the Performing Arts Center, which will add a state-of-the-art proscenium theater and nearly double to footprint of the facility.

These are just a few of the changes taking place in the COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. We’re excited to keep evolving as the college and university continue to grow.
